Dead Men's Spex has another lovely day with Vintage Lover Fair

Well, Little Vintage Lover Fair did it again and booked another lovely warm day for their annual event at Heydon in deepest Norfolk.  It was very busy as usual and we had a good day, we met several of our regular customers and it was nice to catch up with the other stall holders. We also introduced some new people to Dead Men's Spex.

Fun at Sussex Barn

Hi there
Well it was just me out and about with Dead Men's Spex stall on Sunday 4th December. Dead man junior needed a lie-in; 7am on a Sunday seemed very cruel so he and Deadman stayed at home and did homework -so they tell me! I went to Sussex Barn near Burnham Market, Norfolk  with Little Vintage Lover Fair and had a good day. Sussex Barn is mainly used for weddings but it is a fantastic building and is a good place for a vintage fair.

We have been there before with Little Vintage Lover Fair, but not for a couple of years and it was good to return.  I was in the conservatory area with two other stall holders and the tea rooms, it was very civilized and sunlit. I always enjoy chatting to people and selling our lovely eyewear. Thank you if you came to see me.

Dead Men's Spex at Sussex Barns with Little Vintage Lover Fair

Hi there,

Uh,oh it is nearly December already, wow! How did that happen? All is well at Deadmen's Towers and we are starting to think about Christmas. This Sunday, December 4 we are going to be selling our vinatage glasses at Little Vintage Lover Fair's Vintage Christmas event at Sussex Barn, Burnham Market in North Norfolk. It runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

It is beautiful place set in stunning scenery and I enjoy going there. As usual Deadman has been polishing his stock and sharpening his wit ready for the Christmas Fair. We have some lovely frames, how about a new pair for Christmas?! We hope to see you there.

Hot sunshine at Heydon!

Hi there,
Well Sunday's Little Vintage Lover Fair certainly did not disappoint; the weather was glorious, and plenty of people came to the fair.

The village hall was very warm, the stall holders outside were definitely in the cooler positions! We had a good day and saw some familiar faces and met a few new ones too.

Dead Man Junior went off to Heydon green a few times and took some good photos. He favoured the sepia look which works well don't you think? On his travels he discovered that Husk  bakery was open so he had a lovely pizza from them and and even saved his parents a piece each. Once we had packed up the stall, we took the opportunity to have a couple of jars from the Earle Arms on the green with a few of the other stall holders. It was a beautiful evening; the end of another lovely day in Heydon.

Dead Men's Spex at Heydon with Little Vintage Lover Fair

Our open weekend went well, we'd like to thank everyone who came to see us and our refurbished shoffice. They brought glorious weather on the Sunday. Squash was definitely the order of the day. There was even cake left over, much to our neighbours' delight!

On Sunday August 7th Dead Men's Spex will be off to pretty Heydon in Norfolk for another great Vintage Lover Fair. I hope we will get the beautiful sunshine which we have come to associate with this event. Fingers crossed! Well, whatever the weather, we will bring our usual good cheer and great vintage eyewear. Little Vintage Lover Fair a great success!

Hi there

We had a great day on Sunday at Manington Hall in Norfolk, just up the road from  Dead Men's towers, with Little Vintage Lover Fair. The weather was spectacular to match the scenery; Zoe has the knack of picking beautiful days. We had a lovely day and met some new people amid the familiar faces.

We had initially planned to have an indoor pitch but when we arrived it was such a lovely morning that we opted to put our Dead Men's Spex stall outside on the lawn, it was definitely the right decision.

This was the first time Little Vintage Lover Fair had been to Mannington Hall and I hope we can go back again.

Festive times with Dead Men's Spex

Hi there

We had a good time at Holt Hall and were in a great position; close to the very grand fireplace complete with real fire, lovely!

We were also close to the huge and very imposing Christmas tree and the tea rooms- they did a delicious line in mince pies and great sponge cakes too.

It was nice to meet some new faces and see some familiar ones. Deadman junior did a great Christmas card in the crafts area and enjoyed chatting to the other stall holders. He's following in his Dad's footsteps.. perhaps his next step will be reconditioning frames?!

The Eastern Daily Press photographer was on duty and on Thursday I opened the paper to see some familiar faces smiling sweetly at me.

This is our last show before Christmas and it was nice to get into the festive spirit. We've booked to go to Milton Keynes to the MK Handmade and Vintage Weekend Extravaganza  in March 2016. It is a very large event in a huge indoor area called Middleton Hall in front of John Lewis. We are excited about this as it's our first time at this show. I will be looking forward to returning to my old stomping ground, I watched many a classic 80's film at The Point cinema just across the way!!

Dead Men's Spex at Little Vintage Lover Fair's Christmas event at Holt Hall

Yes it is almost December. Wow, we are getting ready to go to Holt Hall next weekend Sunday 6th December with Little Vintage Lover Fair.

We went last year and had a good time, it was very festive with mince pies and children's crafts and a lovely big fire in the entrance hall. We've got some great glasses including some new stock which has just come in. We look forward to seeing you soon and welcoming in the festive season. Deadman has been cultivating his Santa look all year long. Ho ho ho

Summer time with Dead Men's Spex

Well, Little Vintage Lover Fair in Heydon went well. As usual, the weather excelled itself and we had a beautiful summery day. The event was very well supported; there was a constant flow of people and long queues for the coffee van. We saw quite a few familiar faces and had a good (if rather warm) day.We took some copies of Vintage Explorer with us and Zoe and Margaret gave those out at the door. We have just started to advertise Dead Men’s Spex, in there, it is a lovely magazine, well worth a look.

Dead Man Junior and I left Dead Man to stand the stall on his own and sneaked onto the village green for a few minutes. It was a beautifully idyllic scene with people picnicking and relaxing in the grass. I soon had to return to the stall and Dead Man Junior followed later on once he had taken some photos.

Dead Men's Spex off to Heydon

Hi There

Yes, first day of the summer holidays and it throws it down with rain, how mean is that?! Well August is racing towards us and with it another little Vintage Lover Fair on Sunday August 2nd  at the beautiful Norfolk village of Heydon. If my memory serves me correctly; which it doesn't always these days, then it will be our fourth time at Heydon. It usually both warm and busy so let's hope the tradition continues!

Dead Men's Spex will be there displaying a wide range of vintage eyewear ; we have some new frames to share with you! We are looking forward to getting out and seeing people and maybe even buying cake. By the way my rhubarb crumble cake was a hit at our open day; one of Dead Man's good ideas.

Dead Men's Spex at Holt Hall with Liittle Vintage Lover Fair

Hi there

Wow, it is June already. Our shoffice as we've named it is coming on well. Deadman is having fun dressing it with his optical memorabilia and displays. We've had some customers already and our open weekend is Sat11th and Sun12th July from 12-5pm. So we're hoping for sunny weather.

Talking about sunny weather, Deadmen's Spex are at Holt Hall this Sunday June 21st with Little Vintage Lover Fair. It is a beautiful setting and well worth a visit, we went there at Christmas with Little Vintage Lover Fair and it was good. The grounds are lovely and there will be stalls outside and inside. We are looking forward to it, especially when there are vintage goodies and cake involved.... We will have a good selection of our vintage eyewear and hope to see you there.

I'm doing well this month ; 3 blogs in March. Wow!   We are off to Blakeney on the picturesque North Norfolk coast this Sunday 29th March with Little Vintage Lover Fair.

We will have a wide selection of stock; including  plenty of cool cats' eyes and  a good range of Shuron frames. Look out for our cool decoupage heads which set off our glasses beautifully.

Ho Ho Ho Christmas at Dead Men's Spex.

Hi there

Well, the open weekend at Holt Hall was a success. It was the first time they had hosted a Little Vintage Lover Fair and we certainly thought it went well. There was a huge Christmas tree in the hallway and a wonderful log fire burning all day.

What a fantastic tree!

We were in the dining room in front of a rather grand (but unused) fireplace where Deadman could lean in a proprietorial manner. The event was well attended and Holt Hall sold yummy mince pies and ran crafts which were a great success with Deadman Junior. He made a lovely selection of Christmas decorations including a naturalistic wreath and a fir cone tree decoration. He certainly preferred it to sitting with his parents all day...!

We enjoyed our day and it was a good way to get into the Christmas spirit.We are continuing to enjoy the festivities; Deadman was playing Google's shave the Santa game this morning.

Deadmen's Spex at Holt Hall

Hi there

When it comes to stock we are on a roll with a lot of great vintage frames coming in. These include NHS 524s, ladies' cats' eyes in some great colours - blues, greens and pinks and Algha half eyes.- like the ones Santa wears. Deadman is loading a new batch of photos onto the site today.

We are also looking forward to Sunday December 7th as we are having a stall at the beautiful  Holt Hall; tucked away from the road just outside Holt in Norfolk. This Victorian house is now a field studies centre run by Norfolk County Council and they occasionally have events so the public can enjoy it.

Little Vintage Lover Fair are joining the Hall's open doors event, so along with making some great vintage purchases you can also have a look round the hall and indulge in a mince pie or two! If the weather is kind, you may even fancy a stroll through the grounds; into the woodland and down to the lake.

Ooh La la at Dead Men's Spex

Hi there

Well, we had a good time in Heydon at the Little Vintage Lover Fair. Deadman Junior is following the family tradition and enjoyed setting out the stall and chatting to customers.

We also let him loose with the camera; all today's photos are taken by Deadman Junior, our new official photographer.

He wasn't the only cameraman around, Mustard TV were filming for a programme called 'A Taste of Norfolk' which will air in early Autumn.

As usual, the fair was busy and  the weather was wonderful. It was nice to meet new customers and see familiar faces.

At Deadmen's Towers, parcels are a common occurrence, we are on first name terms with our postman and all the local delivery drivers, today we had a special one. It came from France and was full of goodies; round eye frames, pince nez, lenses and even a French testing kit. There are some great round eye frames and a gold pince nez, which is very unusual. Look out for them on the website.

Dead Men's Spex; A Little Vintage Lover of a lovely little village. (Say three times very quickly!)

It's August already and on Sunday 4th August  Dead Men's Spex is off to a Little Vintage Lover Fair in Heydon, a privately owned village in deepest rural Norfolk. Heydon is a beautiful place with only one road for access. It has a parish room, church, pub, bakery, tea room and some attractive cottages all nestled round a very pictueresque green.These are all close to the Elizabethan Heydon Hall, home of the Bulwer Long family.

The fair is held in the recently refurbished parish room; a world war one soldiers' hut which was moved from Staffordshire to Norfolk in 1922.  The shows here have a lovely old world atmosphere, perfect for a vintage fair. So if you fancy a day out come and see us all at Heydon!

Dead Men's Spex

Short sighted ghosts..

Hi There

It's cold enough to freeze a dead man's spex today, Deadman junior and I had a slippery journey to school , it was more tottering dangerously than Torvill and Dean. ( Yes, I have teenage memories of glamorous ice dancers in blue sequins writhing gracefully to Ravel's Bolero )

Fortunately, the weather has not deterred the deadman; he has been labouring away in his workshop well prepared with a heater, some cosy boots and new double glazing, I also keep him supplied with tea and biscuits. He has just come in with a box full of prepared fames to photograph to put on the website tomorrow.

I enjoyed my day out taking the Dead Men's Spex stall to Little Vintage Lover Fair on Sunday,  the weather was incredibly bright and I sold some stock including two pairs of sunglasses!

Deadman junior loves the 1st of December as it means he gets an advent calendar from his grandparents. Last year he had a chocolate one but he wasn't overly keen, he prefers savouries, if he could have one with crisps in he'd be happy! Deadman's hoping for one containing pork scratchings. This year, much to junior's delight he has a joke advent calendar.

Today's joke is:

 "What does a short sighted ghost wear?" "Spooktackles."

Off with a Little Vintage Lover

This week I've been cracking the whip over Deadman to get him working preparing stock for our Deadmen’s Spex stall at Little Vintage Lover Fair this Sunday the 2^nd December at Blakeney Village Hall. It is a small eclectic fair which moves around North Norfolk specialising in vintage and vintage reworked items including fashion and home wares from around the 1920s to the1980s. Everyone is very friendly and they often have fun music from the 1930's supplied by dj.78 AKA Dave Gutteridge who always dresses beautifully complete with glasses from Deadmen's Spex. They also do great cake, which tastes even better when Bunny buys me a slice.

I will be bringing a varied selection of spectacles; for the ladies I have 1950’s cats’ eyes through to 1980’s Terri Brogan frames. For the men I have selection of reworked frames and the ever popular Shurons. In the unisex frames I have some classic favourites including NHS 524s ,1940’s round eyes and  Algha  gold half eye readers. I'm tempting providence rather with a tray of sunglasses, hoping that the rain has finally been pushed away. When the sun does show itself  in the winter it is incredibly dazzling and I find myself desperately groping for my sunnies whilst driving (at traffic lights of course!) There will also be accessories;  fabric glasses cases and spexlaces which are necklaces made from spectacle fronts.

I'm also selling a few cigar boxes on the side, Deadman got rather excitable at an auction and we landed up with rather more than he had bargained for. They are very pretty and beautifully made so I hope they may tempt a few people to be creative and turn them into handbags or even guitars!.

Many happy returns... toot,toot!

Mrs Deadman here.

I have taken up the baton of blog writer for Dead Men's Spex. I was alarmed to see that a year had whizzed past since our last post. I would like to update everyone as to the chicken status at Dead Men’s Towers. The Deadman won! He joined forces with our neighbour and now we have 3 chickens on the allotment. Initially they were very good at dutifully producing eggs but now the supply has dwindled to a big fat zero! Apparently, this is down to them moulting, We could make a feather bed, or at least, a pillow, from the feathers wafting around their pen. That would be very “make do and mend”! I have had to resort to buying eggs from the neighbour who initially supplied the birds, much to his delight.

Turning now to glasses, we have had a busy summer and three good shows; Twinwoods, Little Vintage Lover Fair  and Sheringham 1940’sweekend.  It was lovely to see so many of you again and to enjoy a rain free Twinwoods, something of a luxurious novelty.
