Ho Ho Ho Christmas at Dead Men's Spex.

Well, the open weekend at Holt Hall was a success. It was the first time they had hosted a Little Vintage Lover Fair and we certainly thought it went well. There was a huge Christmas tree in the hallway and a wonderful log fire burning all day.

What a fantastic tree!

We were in the dining room in front of a rather grand (but unused) fireplace where Deadman could lean in a proprietorial manner. The event was well attended and Holt Hall sold yummy mince pies and ran crafts which were a great success with Deadman Junior. He made a lovely selection of Christmas decorations including a naturalistic wreath and a fir cone tree decoration. He certainly preferred it to sitting with his parents all day...!

We enjoyed our day and it was a good way to get into the Christmas spirit.We are continuing to enjoy the festivities; Deadman was playing Google's shave the Santa game this morning.

Deadmen's Spex at Holt Hall

Hi there

When it comes to stock we are on a roll with a lot of great vintage frames coming in. These include NHS 524s, ladies' cats' eyes in some great colours - blues, greens and pinks and Algha half eyes.- like the ones Santa wears. Deadman is loading a new batch of photos onto the site today.

We are also looking forward to Sunday December 7th as we are having a stall at the beautiful  Holt Hall; tucked away from the road just outside Holt in Norfolk. This Victorian house is now a field studies centre run by Norfolk County Council and they occasionally have events so the public can enjoy it.

Little Vintage Lover Fair are joining the Hall's open doors event, so along with making some great vintage purchases you can also have a look round the hall and indulge in a mince pie or two! If the weather is kind, you may even fancy a stroll through the grounds; into the woodland and down to the lake.

New stock and a coffee break at Dead Men's Spex

We've had  a busy month; the Holt and Sheringham 1940s weekend went off well. It was a little cooler than usual, but that didn't deter anyone. Bunny arrived as promised bearing gifts of coffee, Norfolk short bread and other goodies to keep us fortified! Good to see you my old buffer.

Deadman has been on a spending spree and has got a great selection of vintage frames to show for it; check out the cats' eyes.

We've also just received a delivery from American company Best Image which includes some interesting new styles with quality pinned joints. These frames come in larger sizes which is always good news for re-enactors as period frames tend to be very small.

On Saturday we tried out the new cafe at our local post office; Guist General Store, where we are regulars, it was lovely. Deadman junior enjoyed his leek and potato soup and we recommend the coffee.Good luck with your new venture Duncan.

Time for some style!

Hi there,
It was London fashion week last week and I was excited to see that The Times had some fabulous sunglasses on their front page by Brazilian designer Mariana Jungmann.

They would cause a stir on the school run! I love the roses and the detailing. Apparently she's really inspired by lace. Not sure about the patterns on the forehead though...

Talking of style, we are hoping to meet up with our friend Bunny Hooper, the epitome of elegance  at the North  Norfolk Railway 1940's weekend.

But not as cool as Bunny!

We will be selling our glasses and have a good range of 1940's spectacles including some hard to come by larger frames for those of us fortunate enough not to have to subsist on war time fare of bread and hope. We look forward to seeing you there and hope for some fun in the sun.

Ooh La la at Dead Men's Spex

Hi there

Well, we had a good time in Heydon at the Little Vintage Lover Fair. Deadman Junior is following the family tradition and enjoyed setting out the stall and chatting to customers.

We also let him loose with the camera; all today's photos are taken by Deadman Junior, our new official photographer.

He wasn't the only cameraman around, Mustard TV were filming for a programme called 'A Taste of Norfolk' which will air in early Autumn.

As usual, the fair was busy and  the weather was wonderful. It was nice to meet new customers and see familiar faces.

At Deadmen's Towers, parcels are a common occurrence, we are on first name terms with our postman and all the local delivery drivers, today we had a special one. It came from France and was full of goodies; round eye frames, pince nez, lenses and even a French testing kit. There are some great round eye frames and a gold pince nez, which is very unusual. Look out for them on the website.

Dead Men's Spex makes an appearance!

Uh oh, it's been a while since I've blogged. I hope you are enjoying the summer; Deadman junior is making the most of no school and I managed to beat him to the computer!

On Sunday August 3rd we will be heading off a few miles down the road for a Little Vintage Lover Fair  in the beautiful village of Heydon in North Norfolk. We're hoping for a lovely day, last year we had glorious weather and were very busy.

We will have a wide selection of vintage frames and sunglasses including some from the 1970s and 80s. Dead man is busy buffing up frames and I'm busy filling the display boxes and sticking labels on bags. We are looking forward to meeting friends and customers old and new.

Dead Men's Spex gets all dramatic!

One of the good things about selling vintage items is that we sometimes supply T.V programmes and theatres with period eyewear. Presently on TV, Julian Rhind Tutt can be seen cutting a dash in his monocle and ribbon. He plays Gally Threepwood; Clarence's rascal of a brother in BBC1's production of Blandings set in 1929 and based upon P.G Wodehouse's novel of the same name.

We then move to 1960's Oxford in Series 2 of Endeavour the ITV prequal of Morse on Sunday 30th March. Look out for the character who breaks his glasses..

Dead Men's Spex is also currently treading the boards at London's Garrick Theatre in their production of the 1950's court room drama 'Twelve Angry Men'  by Reginald Rose. 

It is always fun looking out for our glasses; it's like playing our own version of Where's Wally !

Upcycling in style at Dead Men's Spex

Uh oh,  sorry! I confess; I have been very lax on the writing front. Over the winter Dead Man has expanded his skill set into crafting and has knocked out several scarves and a fab hat complete with megga bobble. He is now in the process of making me a shawl which at the moment bears an uncanny resemblance to a pair of frilly knickers!

Here at Dead Men's Spex we do like a bit of recycling and upcycling and Dead Man  has re used materials in some of his projects. Dead Man Junior's had a new mat woven out of a load of old jeans and some of the scarves were from recycled t shirts and skirts. It doesn't do to sit still for too long in or house or you might be made into something!

We sell Spexlaces which are made from old frame fronts and were thinking of what else we could do with glasses.

We looked online and found a great site called ReFab Diaries that had loads of great suggestions. How about brooches from lenses or frames from frames?
